• Gifted and Talented Identification Process 

    Identification Milestones
    *Timelines are approximate and subject to change based on various contextual factors.

    September

    Initial diagnostic administration in English language arts and mathematics (all students K-8)
    Team meeting with guardians to develop Individual Learning Plans for the school year (students eligible for tier 3 programming)

    October

    Cycle I pull-out instruction (students eligible for tier 3 programming)

    January

    Second diagnostic administrations in English language arts and mathematics (students eligible for tier 3 programming)
    Review of student progress data to identify students eligible for cycle II of tier 3 programming (all students K-8)
    Team meeting with guardians to develop and implement Individual Learning Plans (students eligible for tier 3 programming)

    February

    Cycle II pull-out instruction begins (students eligible for tier 3 programming)

    April/May/June

    Third diagnostic administrations in English language arts and mathematics (students eligible for tier 3 programming)
    Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) administration (students entering Grades K, 3, 6)
    Review of student progress data to identify students eligible for cycle I of tier 3 programming following school year (all students K-8) 

    Identification Criteria for Tier 3

    Pupils will be considered for participation in the tier 3 gifted and talented programs when compared to their peers within the district. A pupil will be considered for participation in the program for gifted and talented pupils based on the district progress indicators outlined below:

    1. Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Stanine score of 9;
    2. Above grade level placement in district reading and/or math diagnostic assessment;
    3. Writing sample;
    4. Creativity scale

    Identification Criteria for Tier 2

    Pupils will be considered for participation in the tier 2 gifted and talented programs when compared to their peers within the district. A pupil will be considered for participation in the tier 2 programs for gifted and talented pupils who:

    1. Is identified as needing differentiation and modification to the regular curriculum after the content area teacher reviews the pupil’s classroom data and academic performance
    2. Is identified as needing specific challenges within the regular classroom based on the pupil’s academic performance and/or content area teacher’s observation

    Identification Criteria for Tier 1

    All pupils will receive opportunity to receive differentiated instruction within the regular classroom as part of the tier 1 gifted and talented programs.
