    Whether students are “learning to read” or “reading to learn”, the Avon School K-8 English Language Arts curriculum is driven by the New Jersey Student Learning Standards and supported by a balanced literacy framework for instruction. Students are engaged in targeted whole-class and small group instruction through a Reading and Writing Workshop model and balanced literacy centers. In addition, students in Grades K-2 participate in Wilson Fundations, a multisensory language program focusing on key foundational skills (i.e. phonemic awareness, phonics/word study, high-frequency words, reading fluency, etc.). Formative and summative assessment data is used to inform instruction in all areas including mini-lessons, guided reading, strategy groups, and individual conferences. Literacy instruction is scaffolded for all students to allow for a gradual release of responsibility that fosters student independence as readers and writers.
