Our second graders are exploring how scientists sort and classify animals based on their characteristics. Students are observing closely, looking for patterns, and explaining their thinking.

Third grade is kicking off their STEAM curriculum by building the skills that make great thinkers, problem-solvers, and creators! 🧠💡
Before diving into the projects, our students are learning that STEAM is about so much more than building and creating. It’s about attending to precision, problem-solving, flexibility, resilience, and creativity- skills they’ll use in the classroom and far beyond it.
We love watching our students learn to try, adjust, rethink, and try again. That’s where some of the best learning happens! 💙🐯
Our kindergartners are learning the routines of their new classroom… through math! 🧮💙
As students explored their classroom centers, they practiced important math skills while also learning how to work independently, follow routines, share materials, and learn together. Building strong habits AND strong math skills from the very beginning! 🐯✨

Collaboration and creativity were key in Mrs. Darcy's class during a back-to-school Mad Libs grammar challenge! Students paired up to share parts of speech and build unpredictable and hilarious stories. The best part was the students' presentations. They practiced public speaking and shared a good laugh with the class.
🔬 Scientists are problem solvers, but also collaborators.
Before our students dive into labs this year, they’re building the skills that make collaboration successful.
Today’s challenge? Build a cup tower without touching the cups with their hands. It took focus, communication, listening, positivity, problem-solving, and leadership to make it happen.
At Avon Elementary, learning goes beyond mastering content. Experiences like this intentionally help students develop the confidence, collaboration, and critical-thinking skills they’ll carry into the science lab and far beyond the classroom.

Third graders kicked off the year with a little guessing. Students played a game to discover fun facts about their teacher while beginning to build the relationships that will shape their classroom community this year.
Activities like this may feel like simple fun, but they serve an important purpose. Creating opportunities for students to connect with their teacher helps build, trust, belonging, and a sense of safety which are all important foundations for learning.
At AES, we know that students learn best when they feel known, connected, and excited to be part of their classroom community. 💙💛

Mrs. Dugan used a read-aloud about the importance of homework as a springboard for helping students understand *why* homework matters and how developing consistent routines can support their success as learners.
At AES, we believe academic success is about more than what students learn. It’s also about helping them develop the habits and skills that make them successful learners. 💙💛

We are excited to welcome another wonderful new member to our Avon Elementary family! With over 25 years of experience working in schools and academia, Wendy brings with her a wealth of experience. She earned both a Master's and a Doctoral degree in OT from Thomas Jefferson University and holds additional certificates in ergonomic assessment, autism clinical specialty, advanced school based practitioner, and school supervision.

Welcome Maura Darcy. 🐯
Maura is so excited to join the staff at Avon Elementary! She has taught at the elementary level for 8 years and was a school counselor for middle and high school students at Weehawken High School for 6 years. After relocating with her family from Hoboken to Middletown in 2024, Maura is now looking forward to moving her career to Monmouth County. Maura's students can look forward to lots of stories about her two sons, Henry and Graham, and her dog Harvey.

Maria brings 20 years of experience in education, having served as a classroom teacher, Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant (LDTC), dyslexia interventionist, and most recently, Supervisor of Special Services.
Throughout her career, Maria has worked with students across grade levels and has developed extensive experience in special education, literacy intervention, assessment, and supporting students with diverse learning needs. She is especially passionate about helping students recognize their individual strengths and ensuring that teachers and families have the support they need to help every child succeed.
Maria is thrilled to join our staff and looks forward to getting to know the students, families, and staff and becoming part of our close-knit Avon community.

This week, we’re excited to introduce you to the newest members of our Avon Elementary School family! 💙💛
First up is Olivia Krupinski 👋
Olivia comes to us with years of experience supporting students from preschool through high school, with a strong focus on early childhood intervention, behavioral and social-emotional support, and special education. She specializes in identifying developmental and learning needs, supporting early intervention, conducting psychological and developmental evaluations, and collaborating with families and school teams to develop effective, individualized supports.
She also has extensive experience facilitating social skills groups and utilizing play-based therapeutic approaches to help children strengthen communication, emotional regulation, peer relationships, problem-solving, and appropriate social interactions in a developmentally meaningful way.
Olivia describes her approach as collaborative and strengths-based, with an emphasis on creating practical interventions that help students build confidence, develop meaningful relationships, and successfully participate in the school environment.
