Avon Elementary School students and staff gathered on September 11 for a special ceremony honoring the victims, survivors, and heroes of September 11, 2001. The school community came together dressed in red, white, and blue as a visible symbol of remembrance and patriotism.
Local first responders were invited to join the school community for the ceremony, giving students an opportunity to recognize the police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and other community members who serve and protect others every day.
“Each year, on September 11th, we take time to remember the events on this day in 2001,” the ceremony’s opening remarks shared. “Today's date in history forever recognizes the many Americans, including firefighters, police, first responders, and everyday citizens, who bravely took action to unselfishly help others that day.”
The ceremony also recognized the members of the United States Armed Forces who continue to serve and make sacrifices to protect the freedom and safety of our country. September 11 is recognized as Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance, encouraging Americans to honor those affected by 9/11 through acts of service and kindness.
For Avon Elementary, the day provided an opportunity to connect that larger history to the students’ own community.
“Our local police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel stand ready to help our families and neighbors whenever they are needed,” students and staff were reminded. “Their commitment to protecting and caring for others reflects the same spirit of service and courage that we honor today.”
The ceremony also encouraged students to consider how they can carry that spirit of service into their own lives. Students were reminded that September 11 is not only a day to remember, but also a day to reflect on the importance of kindness, helping others, and coming together as a community.
“Even the smallest acts of service can make a difference.”
The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence honoring the lives lost on September 11, 2001.
Avon Elementary is grateful to the local first responders who took the time to join the school community and to all those who serve others each day. Their presence offered students a meaningful reminder that courage, service, and community are not just ideas we remember - they are values we can practice every day.
