Avon Educators Present at NJTESOL Conference
Avon Elementary School is proud to celebrate two outstanding educators, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Services Danielle Price and Special Education Teacher, Reading Specialist snd ESL teacher Sharon Cumiskey, who recently presented at the NJTESOL Conference, a statewide professional learning event focused on supporting multilingual learners and advancing inclusive instructional practices.
Their presentation, “The Science of Reading & MLs,” explored research-based strategies to support multilingual learners in reading and writing instruction. The session highlighted the latest research connected to the Science of Reading and demonstrated practical classroom applications designed to meet the diverse needs of students.
Participants also learned how active learning, scaffolded assessments, and the WIDA Can Do Descriptors can be used to recognize and build upon student strengths.
The presentation provided educators with actionable activities and instructional ideas that could immediately be brought back to classrooms to strengthen literacy instruction for multilingual learners.
“This opportunity speaks to the caliber of educators we have at Avon Elementary School,” said Cathy Danahy, Superintendent/Principal of Avon Elementary School. “Mrs. Price and Mrs. Cumiskey are deeply committed to ensuring that all students receive high-quality, research-based instruction that honors their strengths and supports their growth. We are incredibly proud to see them sharing their expertise with educators across New Jersey.”
The NJTESOL Conference brings together educators from across the state to collaborate on best practices for teaching multilingual learners and fostering equitable learning environments.
Avon Elementary School is honored to have its staff contributing to these important statewide conversations and showcasing the innovative work happening within the district.
