Avon Elementary School provides approximately 155 students in grades Kindergarten through Grade Eight with a comprehensive, standards-based curriculum aligned to both the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards. Students are challenged to become independent thinkers, creative problem solvers, and contributing team members with units and lessons designed to reinforce (expose, develop, and secure) essentials knowledge, skills and understands through 21st Century learning all while preparing our young minds for college and career. The school community values the academic, social, and emotional well-being of the ‘whole child’ and has committed to a Character Education program that seeks to promote social awareness, collaboration, digital citizenship, and conflict resolution as a part of the students’ daily routines. Additionally, students enjoy a technology-rich learning environments that all offer interactive display boards, audio/visual amplification, one to one wireless student devices, and the tools and manipulatives that support all aspects of the design loop.
Enrichment and intervention are offered to students in a myriad of fashions to ensure each child’s individual academic needs are met. “FLEX” courses are offered to all middle school students in order to afford students with the opportunity to explore interests outside the traditional academic setting; courses offered range from coding, tv production, instrument instruction, drama, and Science Olympiad. Our younger learners enjoy weekly enrichment which is modeled after a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Music) program and asks students to collaborate, design, construct, and problem solve. Enrichment is also offered through various county-wide programs that provided opportunities for our students to work with peers from across Monmouth County in various settings and activities. Academic intervention is a staple to the school day as well with time built-in during the school day as well as programs after school to meet the needs of all learners.
The administration and staff of the Avon School consider our students’ parents partners in our learning community. We consider positive parental involvement a major factor in student progress and success. In Avon, our active Home and School Association (AHSA) provides many opportunities for parents to connect to the school. Parents involved with AHSA provide additional opportunities for students to participate in extracurricular activities and enhance their community involvement. Members of the Avon community also provide support for our school through the Avon Education Foundation, whose mission is to promote life-long learning to all residents of our community.
